Cross Mill is a rare example of a small country water powered grain mill. The Cross Mill tucked away in its unspoiled little valley was bypassed by modernization and its basic machinery survives to demonstrate
the elements basic to a rural mill. The formal name of this historic Pennsylvania grist mill, the Wallace-Cross Mill, is derived from the name of its 1826 builder, Andrew Wallace and his son-in-law, J. Nelson
Cross. Nelson Cross assumed ownership of the mill near the turn of the century and operated it until his son,
Harry Cross, acquired it. In 1979, Harry Cross turned his grist mill, which is located in East Hopewell Town Township, over to the County of York to be used to educate future
generations about this important aspect of their heritage. Cross Mill, as it is commonly known today, now serves as a multiple use recreation facility, which hosts educational tours and special events. |
