History

Significant Events in the Life of Cross Mill

Circa 1840 Wallace-Cross Mill was constructed and operated by Alexander Wallace until 1861.

1863-Alexander’s daughters, Alice D. and Mary A. Wallace, took ownership of the mill and operated it together until 1895.

1895- The mill (hense forth known as "the Cross mill") was purchased by J. Nelson Cross from his two aunts. He operated the millt until 1944.

1922-A Fitz water wheel purchased and intalled.

1927-1935- A steam engine was used to supplement water power to operate the mill machinery.

1944-Harry Cross assumed ownership from his father and continued to operate the mill.

1972-Hurricane Agnes washed out the dam. Temporary power was supplied by tractor.

1976-Hurricane Eloise washed out the dam once again. Temporary power was again supplied by tractor.

1979-Harry Cross donated the mill to York County. He continued to operate the mill until 1985.

1995-Restoration of the mill byYork County Parks Department and Friends of Cross Mill began.

1999-Cross Mill was opened for public use.
